Our History

I'm open to input from professional and amateur historians alike, on this subject!

We know that most of the building is over 400 years of age, although the oldest picture that we have is around a hundred years old.

Records show that the building used to be both a pub and a bakery. Looking from the front, the door on the left, which is now the main front entrance was, in fact the bakery. (One of our more senior regulars claims to have baked bread in the area now used as the Gent's toilet, many years ago as a boy!)

The original door, to the right, has long been sealed.

We also know that the village was once part of the Wyndham Estates, owned by Lord Wyndham – using their family motto "au bon droit" which translates to "by divine right" or "fair play to all".

So, if you can offer some historical information (including anything regarding the "ghost of the creeping woman" that supposedly haunts the downstairs bar) I will be pleased to hear from you!
